In a rare display of political unity, some Ghanaian political parties have announced plans for a nationwide protest on Monday, May 5, 2025, to oppose what they describe as the “unlawful suspension” of the Chief Justice and the “unlawful termination” of key judicial appointments.

The protest, they say, is aimed at defending Ghana’s constitutional order and safeguarding judicial independence.

In a statement dated April 25, 2025, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) jointly declared their resolve to rally citizens in a peaceful demonstration.

Following a meeting held on April 24, the parties emphasized their collective commitment to promoting democracy, rule of law, and the integrity of judicial institutions.

The release described the current developments as part of a “disturbing trend” of judicial interference, pointing to historical incidents involving attempts to undermine judicial figures.

“This blatant disregard for the rule of law is not merely a political matter but an assault on the very soul of our democracy,” the parties noted.

Citing a 2010 attempt to remove Ghana’s first female Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood, the parties underscored a perceived pattern of judicial intimidation and called on all Ghanaians to resist such encroachments through lawful and democratic means.
