Dr. Rashid Tanko, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has demanded the resignation of the Electoral Commission (EC) amidst escalating tensions surrounding the results for the Ablekuma North Constituency at the EC’s center in Ridge, Greater Accra.
Speaking on ABC News GH on Friday, January 17, Tanko firmly stated, “We are rather asking the EC to step down for their illegal activities,” in response to concerns about the commission’s handling of the electoral process.
Tanko’s comments come in the wake of disturbing incidents at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the EC, where suspected NDC-affiliated thugs stormed the collation center.
Over 40 individuals ransacked the venue, vandalizing property and halting the proceedings.
These disruptions have compounded the already delayed process, with disagreements over the authentication of results from three polling stations bringing the collation to a standstill.
With 278 out of 281 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency verified, the fate of the remaining three stations hangs in the balance.
Tanko’s call for the EC to step down has intensified the already volatile situation, with tensions continuing to rise between the NDC and the commission.
As the country watches closely, the future of this EC leadership remains uncertain.
