Anti-corruption campaigner Vitus Azeem has raised alarm over what he described as a worrying pattern of case withdrawals by the Attorney General, Dominic Ayine.
His concerns follow the recent discontinuation of the prosecution of former Finance Minister and Founder of the defunct uniBank, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, and seven others.
Speaking on ABC in the Morning, Mr. Azeem noted that the trend undermines Ghana’s commitment to tackling corruption, especially when the individuals involved are politically connected.
Mr. Azeem questioned the justification offered by the Attorney General, who claimed that over 60% of the state’s financial losses in the uniBank case had been recovered, making further prosecution unnecessary.
The advocate, however, disagreed with this rationale, stressing that recovering some of the funds should not be used as an excuse to abandon legal proceedings.
“The fact that you have been able to recover a percentage of the monies is not a good reason to drop the case,” he said.
He further warned that continued withdrawals of such high-profile cases could seriously weaken public trust in the judicial process.
“If this continues, people will lose confidence in government fighting corruption,” Mr. Azeem cautioned.
He urged authorities to prioritise full accountability and ensure that all individuals implicated in financial crimes face the full force of the law.
