The Generational Rights Protection Society, a prominent anti-galamsey advocacy group, has announced a protest march on April 28, 2025, to demand urgent and decisive action against illegal mining in Ghana. At a press conference held earlier today, the group called for the government to declare a state of emergency over the worsening environmental crisis, particularly the continued degradation of water bodies and forest reserves.
Convener of the group, Kwame Appiah Kubi, stressed the need to depoliticize the fight against illegal mining, citing a lack of tangible progress despite public outcry and government promises. “Galamsey is still happening today. Even as we speak, the environment continues to suffer, and it is incumbent on us as citizens to sustain the fight,” he said. He emphasized that the environmental damage poses a serious threat to future generations if not addressed with urgency and transparency.
The planned demonstration will begin at 2:00 p.m. from the Obra Sports Stadium and end at the Jubilee House. Co-Convenor Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah also called for legal action against Akonta Mining, following the revocation of its license by the Lands Minister. “If Akonta Mining violated the law, there must be prosecution. This cannot be swept under the rug as mere propaganda,” he asserted, reinforcing the group’s call for accountability in the fight against illegal mining.
