A major anti-galamsey operation spearheaded by the Mankranso District Police Command in collaboration with the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly has led to the confiscation of five excavators and several firearms during a coordinated raid on illegal mining sites in the Mpasaaso and Achiase communities.
The operation, conducted on Monday, June 2, 2025, is part of a broader crackdown by local authorities aimed at curbing the escalating environmental damage caused by illegal mining in the Ashanti Region.

In a statement issued by DSP Godwin Ahianyo, Head of Public Affairs for the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the raid targeted areas where unauthorized mining activities were ongoing.
Upon arrival, security personnel encountered active operations, but the miners fled the scene, abandoning their equipment and weapons.
The excavators are currently being held at the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly compound, while the weapons and ammunition are in police custody pending further investigation.

Authorities believe the miners may have been receiving armed protection, highlighting growing concerns about organized criminal involvement in illegal mining within forest reserves.
DSP Ahianyo commended the personnel involved and appealed to the public to support ongoing efforts by sharing credible intelligence that could lead to further arrests and prosecutions.

“We call on citizens to assist law enforcement in the fight against illegal mining by reporting suspicious activities,” he stated.
This latest operation underscores heightened government efforts to address the widespread environmental harm and water contamination linked to galamsey.
As public pressure mounts, security forces continue to intensify surveillance and interventions in known illegal mining hotspots across the country.
