The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has officially announced the commencement of the annual ban on drumming and noise-making, effective today, Monday, May 12, through to Thursday, June 12, 2025.
The directive, which aligns with customs of the Ga Traditional Council during the Nmaa Dumↄ period, is aimed at promoting peace, harmony, and national security in the capital.
In a statement signed by the AMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the Assembly emphasized the importance of mutual respect among religious and traditional groups throughout the period.
As part of the guidelines, churches have been instructed to conduct activities within their premises without the use of musical instruments or outdoor loudspeakers.
The statement also prohibits loud preaching by roadside evangelists and the use of amplified sound at mosques, pubs, and other venues.
“Roadside evangelists are to cease their activities during this period,” the AMA stated, while also banning all funeral-related activities during the one-month period to preserve the solemnity of the tradition.
Enforcement of the ban will be carried out solely by an authorized task force comprising AMA officials, the Ghana Police Service, and representatives from the Traditional Councils.
“Apart from this identifiable task force with tags, no other person or group of persons should be seen or found enforcing the abatement of noise in the metropolis,” Mr. Ankrah cautioned.
The AMA concluded by urging full compliance from residents and provided contact details for key stakeholders to handle any concerns or clarifications, emphasizing, “Accra, live in, love it!”
