The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced a set of emergency measures in response to the recent killings in Asawase, including that of the Kusase Chief, Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge.
The Chief was fatally shot by unknown gunmen near his residence on Tuesday, July 22, and another man was similarly gunned down just today in the same area under comparable circumstances.
In light of the rising tension, REGSEC, led by Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, convened an emergency meeting on July 24 to strategize on restoring calm and order.
A statement signed by Dr. Amoakohene outlined four key directives aimed at curbing the violence.
These include an immediate ban on the use of motorbikes after 7:00 pm, prohibition of unregistered or improperly lit motorbikes, and a ban on the wearing of smocks, which security agencies say are increasingly used to conceal weapons.
The inter-tribal football tournament has also been suspended indefinitely to help reduce the potential for ethnic-related clashes.
REGSEC emphasized that these measures are necessary to contain any further security threats.
The latest victim, whose identity remains unknown, was reportedly attacked near his vehicle by two assailants on a motorbike, who then fled the scene.
Police and military presence has been intensified in the area, and investigators are combing the scene for evidence. While police have yet to link the two killings, fears of escalating violence loom large in the community.
Dr. Amoakohene called on the public to support the security agencies and provide any information that may aid in apprehending the perpetrators, reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and justice in the region.
