The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed that some invigilators were caught aiding candidates by dictating answers during the second day of the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Speaking to ABC News, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, disclosed that the incident occurred at one of the examination centres, and the culprits have been referred to law enforcement for further action.
“Today, we’ve had some invigilators also had mobile phones… they were dictating to the candidates,” Kapi stated.
He added that WAEC is working closely with the police to clamp down on such breaches and will relocate the affected centre as part of long-term reforms.
The examination, which began on June 11 with over 600,000 candidates nationwide, had already recorded 10 cases of malpractice by the end of Day 1.
WAEC emphasized that such irregularities—ranging from impersonation to possession of unauthorised materials—will be met with strict sanctions, including the cancellation of results where necessary.
