Financial Expert from the University of Cape Coast, Dr Seyram Kawor has emphasized the need for citizen involvement in budgetary decisions, stating that public buy-in is crucial for a budget to be successful.
Speaking on Prime News on ABC News GH, he criticized the lack of public engagement in national economic discussions which has led to the failure of its several policies and tax incentives.
“Today’s is a repetition of what has been said,” he remarked, suggesting that government forums should be decentralized to allow more Ghanaians to understand the economic challenges and contribute to solutions.
He argued that merely announcing policies without ensuring public understanding creates a disconnect between government decisions and the realities of the people.
“I would have wished that the forum was taken around the country, so that we will all understand the issues affecting the economy, carrying the citizens with you,” he suggested.
Dr. Kawor warned that excluding the public from economic discussions could deepen mistrust in government policies and reduce their effectiveness.
He also criticized the divisive nature of Ghanaian politics, stating that it negatively impacts national development.
“This kind of politics is harming us as a country,” he stressed.
He urged leaders to prioritize national interest over political affiliations, arguing that a more inclusive approach is needed to drive economic recovery and sustainable development.
