Education specialist and former Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Charles Aheto-Tsegah, has thrown his weight behind the closure of schools in Nkwanta following renewed violent clashes in the area.
Speaking to ABC News GH on Monday, Mr. Aheto-Tsegah emphasized that the safety of students and staff must take precedence over academic activities during such turbulent times.
“Now we should close down schools,” he asserted. “It’s important that all schools close so people will not be affected by collateral damages and stray bullets and other.”
His comments come in the wake of a tragic incident last week in which a student of Nkwanta Senior High School was fatally hit by a stray bullet while writing a mock examination.
The shocking development has left the Nkwanta South Municipality reeling, prompting swift action by education authorities who have since ordered the closure of all basic schools in the area to protect lives.
Mr. Aheto-Tsegah underscored that this moment requires prioritizing human life above educational continuity.
“Now it is not very much of an education issue but a security issue,” he stated, urging security forces to act swiftly.
“We are hoping that the security service will be able to restore peace in the area to ensure students will be able to go back to school and resume their business.”
