Meanwhile, Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo has unveiled comprehensive reforms to revamp Ghana’s jury system, aimed at improving efficiency, fairness, and inclusivity in criminal trials.
Speaking at the opening of the 2025 criminal assizes in Accra, she announced the expansion of the jury pool to include a wider range of eligible Ghanaians, particularly from the private sector.
This move is intended to prevent the overuse of a small group of jurors, whom she described as becoming “almost professional jurors,” contrary to the intended lay composition.
Citing Sections 208 and 213 of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 30), the Chief Justice emphasized the need for stricter eligibility screening and a more rigorous, transparent annual review of juror lists.
The reforms are part of broader efforts to uphold integrity and public confidence in Ghana’s justice system.
