The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has intensified its crackdown on unauthorized broadcasters, ordering the shutdown of six radio stations operating without valid licenses.
The affected stations include Fire Group of Companies (Sunyani 90.1MHz), I-Zar Consult Limited (Tamale 89.7MHz), Abochannel Media Group (Adidome 105.7MHz), Okyeame Radio Limited (Bibiani 99.7MHz), Mumen Bono Foundation (Techiman 99.7MHz), and Osikani Community FM (Nkrankwanta 99.7MHz).
According to the Ministry, these entities have failed to renew their frequency authorizations, settle required fees, or submit regulatory documentation within the legally stipulated period, rendering their operations unlawful.
“In accordance with Act 775, it is unlawful to operate a broadcasting service without a valid frequency authorization. The NCA will take the necessary steps to halt all unauthorized transmissions and ensure compliance with the law,” the statement read.
The directive, issued on Tuesday, February 18, mandates the immediate cessation of operations for the listed stations, with enforcement expected to begin in the coming days.
The Ministry added that strict regulatory measures would be put in place to prevent any of the stations from resuming transmission under different names without legal approval.
This sweeping action follows the closure of Gumah FM in Bawku over allegations of inciting violence, suggesting a broader effort by the government to sanitize the airwaves.
While some view the move as a necessary regulatory step to ensure compliance with broadcasting laws, others fear it could be part of a wider agenda to suppress dissenting voices.
With the Ministry standing firm on its decision, the fate of these stations now lies in their ability to meet the required legal standards or face permanent closure.
