Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Member of Parliament and Minister Designate for the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has called on companies to establish daycare facilities within workplaces to support nursing mothers.
Appearing before the Parliament Appointments Committee on Wednesday, she emphasized that providing a child-friendly environment would allow mothers to work efficiently with the psychological comfort of having their babies nearby.
If companies find it challenging to increase maternity leave from three months to four, creating daycare centers at workplaces would address the need for stability for both mothers and children, she indicated.
Addressing the current three-month maternity leave policy, Lartey stressed the importance of extended leave, noting it allows women to heal and bond with their children.
She proposed practical alternatives for companies unable to implement a four-month leave policy.
“It is more important for women to take a prolonged period, not only to take care of their children but also to heal,” she stated.
The nominee also touched on paternity leave, highlighting its importance for fostering family support. “It is important for men to take leave to support the family,” she said, advocating a more inclusive approach to parental care.
The Appointments Committee, chaired by Mr. Bernard Ahiafor, is expected to conclude the vetting of all nominees by Monday, January 27, 2025.
