Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, has assured that the government remains firmly committed to the prompt release of funds for the health sector to safeguard public well-being and enhance national productivity.
Speaking during a meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Alliance for Vaccine Initiatives (GAVI), Dr. Sania Nishtar, at the Ministry of Finance, he highlighted recent steps taken, including the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which has resulted in the release of GHS30 billion to support healthcare delivery.
“The government’s commitment to the health sector remains steadfast,” Hon. Nyarko affirmed, adding that preparations are underway to position Ghana as a pharmaceutical hub ahead of its transition from GAVI support by 2030.
He emphasized that the initiative, supported by GAVI, aims to create jobs and enhance the local pharmaceutical industry.
Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, commended GAVI for its crucial role in strengthening Ghana’s immunization programme, noting that the country currently leads in vaccination coverage across the sub-region.
Dr. Nishtar praised Ghana’s health priorities and described the country’s vaccination system as a trust-based model that has successfully increased access, particularly for women. She also pledged GAVI’s continued support to ensure a smooth transition process.
