The Ghana Water Company Limited has begun a minimal spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam as rains intensify across the country.
According to the company’s Communications Director, Stanley Martey, the water level at the Dam currently stands at 44.4 feet — prompting the opening of two gates to manage inflows from the Densu River.
Martey says this preemptive move is necessary to avoid exceeding the Dam’s maximum operational level of 48 feet and to preserve its structural integrity.
He emphasized that although 47 feet is the standard upper limit, GWCL begins controlled spillage at 44 feet to prevent any risk of overflow or collapse — both of which could trigger serious downstream flooding.
“As rains set in, we are seeing high inflows. If these outpace the outflows, we’ll have no choice but to increase the spillage,” he said.
The company is calling on residents living in flood-prone buffer zones to evacuate immediately and is urging local authorities to implement precautionary measures.
GWCL warns that failure to act swiftly could lead to far worse consequences than seen in previous years.
