The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a recent rise in COVID-19 cases within the University of Ghana community, though it emphasized that all reported cases so far have been mild, with no hospitalisations.
In a press release issued on June 26, 2025, the GHS acknowledged that while the World Health Organization no longer considers COVID-19 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, the virus continues to present seasonal threats that must not be ignored.
The GHS, in collaboration with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), is actively monitoring the situation on campus and working closely with university authorities to prevent further spread.
The health agency has stressed the importance of proactive containment efforts, including case surveillance and public health education, especially in high-density environments like universities.
Ghanaians have been urged to maintain vigilance and strictly adhere to recommended preventive measures such as wearing face masks in crowded areas, practicing social distancing, regular handwashing, and seeking prompt medical attention when experiencing symptoms like cough, fever, or breathing difficulties.
GHS reaffirmed its commitment to managing the outbreak and called for the public’s full cooperation to limit transmission and avoid a broader resurgence.
