The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has condemned the dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, describing it as a gross abuse of power and a violation of due process.
In an official statement issued on Wednesday, April 23, the GMA criticised what it called political interference in the administration of a critical national health institution.
“The manner in which the dismissal was carried out is an affront to due process and an abuse of power by the Hon. Minister of Health,” the GMA stated.
The association voiced solidarity with the medical staff at TTH, warning that the actions of Minister Akandoh and the Member of Parliament for Tamale North have fueled an atmosphere of intimidation following the recent death of a patient at the hospital.
The GMA further demanded an unqualified apology from both officials, accusing them of “unwarranted attacks” on hospital personnel and facilitating a “media audit” of the case that breached patient confidentiality and exposed staff to legal risk and public backlash.
“The head of the Emergency Unit has since received threats and been subjected to cyberbullying, endangering his safety and mental well-being,” the GMA revealed.
In its concluding remarks, the GMA called on TTH’s management to ensure the protection and psychological safety of affected staff, and pledged to monitor the situation closely.
“The GMA remains committed to supporting sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery across the country,” the statement noted, “but this must begin with respect for the rule of law, professional integrity, and the protection of frontline health workers.”
