Tensions have flared once again in the Upper East Region following the brutal killing of Mohammed Seidu Akugri, the Bongo District Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
Akugri was reportedly shot, killed, and burnt by unidentified assailants near Nangodi. The gruesome incident has sparked widespread outrage and fear, especially amid the ongoing Bawku conflict.
Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly condemned the act, describing it as a “dastardly” attack and extending his “heartfelt condolences to the family” of the late official.
In response to the killing, the Kusaug Heritage Defenders, a youth group from the Kusaug area, is calling for urgent government intervention.
Speaking on ABC In The Morning, on Wednesday, May 21, the group’s president, Ahmed Isshaq Ndebugri, emphasized the need for swift action.
“The government must fast track their interventions as many lives have so far been lost and destroyed,” he said. While urging calm among residents, Ndebugri warned that continued inaction could lead to further bloodshed.
“Calm down and let’s give government some time to solve the issue,” he urged, striking a balance between patience and urgency.
