Agro Research Scientist, Dr. Roger Kanton, has called on the government to introduce a 30% subsidy on fuel for tractors and combine harvesters as part of the roll-out of the 24-hour economy.
He believes this intervention would significantly reduce the cost of agricultural production and, in turn, make food more affordable for consumers.
“It is in the right direction and that will enhance productivity and drive growth,” he told ABC News GH on July 3.
Dr. Kanton explained that supporting mechanised agriculture with targeted fuel subsidies would directly impact operational efficiency, especially in large-scale farming.
He proposed that a digital system be implemented to track the usage of the subsidy and ensure accountability.
“Digital system, we can track them (farms). When you do that you are also ensuring that…” he said, stressing the need for transparency and monitoring in the distribution of subsidies.
He further urged the government to provide the necessary enabling resources such as facilities and security to support the initiative.
“Special arrangement for fuel subsidy for farmer. For instance, for trucker owners, the use of light and others,” he added, emphasizing that strategic support across various sectors is key to the success of the 24-hour economy.
