The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has doubled down on his commitment to ensuring the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ Bill.
Addressing traditional leaders and NDC supporters on January 26, Bagbin declared, “I can lose my life for this cause,” emphasizing his dedication to preserving Ghanaian cultural and moral values.
Bagbin revealed plans to formally engage the Minister for Justice and Attorney General to expedite the reintroduction of the bill to the president for assent.
“This will not take time. It will be passed this year. It is ungodly, and nobody should joke with me on this,” he asserted.
The bill, previously passed by Parliament in 2024 but denied presidential assent, has reignited national debate.
Bagbin criticized the former president’s refusal to sign it, calling the decision unconstitutional and a betrayal of Parliament’s authority.
While supporters hail the bill as vital to protecting Ghanaian traditions, critics warn of its potential human rights implications.
