Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, has sharply criticised the government for its failure to revoke Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which permits mining in protected forest reserves.
Addressing journalists at the International Press Centre, Dr. Ashigbey described the delay as a betrayal of public trust and a direct threat to Ghana’s environmental integrity.
He recalled that President John Mahama and key government officials had made what he termed a “solemn vow” to revoke the regulation, a promise that remains unfulfilled.
“This inaction undermines the very fight against illegal mining and compromises the future of our forest reserves,” he stressed. Dr. Ashigbey called for urgent and decisive steps to reverse the policy and safeguard Ghana’s natural heritage.
