Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has cast doubt on the full completion of Ghana’s ambitious Agenda 111 hospital programme, warning that delivering all the projects within a limited timeframe is not feasible.
Speaking on Citi FM on Wednesday, April 22, the Minister said the current administration is committed to strengthening healthcare delivery but must confront the realities surrounding the large-scale initiative.
According to him, the government inherited the Agenda 111 projects at different stages of completion, making it difficult to promise that all facilities will be delivered within a single political term. He stressed that while some hospital projects are nearing completion, a significant number remain in early phases and will require substantial funding and time.
“If we say that we will be able to complete all the Agenda 111 projects, which are over 100, within one year or even four years, it is a lie. Let’s be realistic and I started saying this even in opposition, and you heard me loud and clear that there was no way we were going to complete these 111 hospitals within the timeframe the president gave us,” he stated.
The Agenda 111 initiative was introduced under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a flagship healthcare intervention aimed at addressing infrastructure deficits across the country. The programme envisioned the construction of 111 hospitals in districts, regional capitals, and specialised locations to improve access to quality healthcare, especially in underserved communities.
Mr Akandoh emphasised that the government’s priority remains ensuring that ongoing projects are completed sustainably, rather than making promises that may not be achievable within current economic constraints.
