The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Dr. Rashid Tanko, has dismissed allegations by the Minority caucus suggesting that President John Dramani Mahama is maneuvering to seek a third presidential term.
Speaking on ABC News’ morning show, Dr. Tanko described the Minority’s claims made during a recent press conference on the removal of the Chief Justice as baseless and politically motivated.
He stated unequivocally that President Mahama has no intention of seeking a third term and urged critics to refrain from misrepresenting the constitutional process for political gain.
“We will not fall for their trap.”
“That press conference was a diversional task. It was to divert attention” Tanko said.
Dr. Tanko further condemned the Minority’s stance on the nomination of judges to the Supreme Court, calling it hypocritical.
Responding to their assertions that the appointments were “unprecedented,” he emphasized that the 1992 Constitution clearly grants the President the authority to appoint judges.
“The constitution has given executive power to the president to appoint, and he has exercised that power,” he stated. He pointed out the inconsistency in the Minority’s position, particularly given past practices under previous administrations.
Labeling the Minority’s press conference as a “diversionary tactic,” Dr. Tanko suggested that the event was an attempt to distract from the internal turmoil currently unfolding within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“They should be mindful of how their party is in disarray,” he noted, advising the opposition to focus on resolving its internal issues instead of creating distractions.
According to Dr. Tanko, the government remains focused on fulfilling its constitutional mandate and will not be sidetracked by politically charged narratives.
