Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to upgrade the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital, into a full teaching hospital. Addressing supporters during his Greater Accra ‘Thank You Tour’ at the Old Ghanata Astroturf in Dodowa on Friday, May 16, Mahama said the move is aimed at improving healthcare outcomes in the region.
“Under healthcare delivery in this region we will aim to transform the quality outcomes for our healthcare. We therefore intend to upgrade the Greater Accra Regional Hospital into a full teaching hospital. That is the Ridge Hospital,” he stated.
He added that the long-delayed Phase Two of the hospital will be constructed to support its expanded role, with the upgraded facility set to affiliate with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons to boost specialist training and reduce external referrals.
Mahama also outlined broader healthcare reforms targeting underserved communities. He announced plans to expand Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in peri-urban areas like Bortianor, Kpone, and Shai Osudoku.
“Furthermore we will expand CHIPS compounds in per urban communities like Bortianor, Kpone, Shai Osudoku to ensure that primary healthcare is accessible and reliable,” he said.
In a bid to improve the welfare of health workers, Mahama assured that both existing and new CHPS facilities will include staff accommodation.
“For existing CHIPS compounds and all new CHIPS compounds we will build we are going to include accommodation for health workers who man the CHIPS compound,” he added.
