Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has dismissed Dr. Adam Atiku, the Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), following allegations of negligence that reportedly contributed to the recent death of a patient at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward.
The decision comes amid rising public concern over the deteriorating quality of healthcare delivery at the facility, particularly due to non-functional medical equipment and persistent service delays.
The move follows a surprise visit to the hospital by Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Tuesday, April 22.
The minister’s visit was part of a broader initiative to assess healthcare delivery challenges in the Northern Region. During the inspection, Mr. Akandoh expressed disappointment at the number of idle medical machines at the hospital, despite confirmed payments to suppliers.
He also cited the hospital’s ongoing struggle with Tamale’s water crisis, which continues to affect operations.
“The situation here is deeply worrying, especially when payments have been made and equipment still remains unused,” the Health Minister remarked. He stressed that resolving the hospital’s issues would require both internal collaboration and support from the highest levels of government.
He described the water shortage as a regional problem that demands urgent presidential attention.
Mr. Akandoh urged the public to remain calm and continue using the hospital’s services while reforms are being implemented.
“When we finish with them, we will all think through it, because I cannot do it all alone, I have to involve them, and we are thinking through it together,” he said.
The Health Ministry has pledged to work closely with hospital management to prioritize the most urgent needs and restore public confidence in the facility’s operations.
