President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will officially launch the 24-Hour Economy policy on Republic Day, July 1.
He made this known on Wednesday during a multi-sectoral engagement at the Presidency, stating that the selected date “holds special significance as we begin this bold national agenda.”
The final policy draft, prepared by Presidential Advisor Mr. Goosie Tanoh, has undergone thorough review.
“What we have before us now moves beyond vision to concrete action,” Mahama said, emphasizing that the plan aims to restructure Ghana’s entire production system from the ground up.
Central to the strategy is the transformation of the Volta Lake Economic Corridor.
“We’re going to transform our beautiful Volta Lake into more than just a power source,” Mahama explained, outlining a development plan that includes two million hectares of lakeside land, revitalized fisheries, and new industrial parks.
Funding will be supported by the Development Bank Ghana and the Venture Capital Trust Fund, with SMEs in sectors such as agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, and digital services receiving priority.
Mahama also introduced the Aspire24 training initiative, ensuring youth are prepared for shift work and digital jobs.
“This isn’t about Accra calling all the shots,” he said, noting that each district will have its own task force. The draft policy will be released for public consultation on Tuesday, June 3, as the government works to establish a statutory 24-Hour Economy Secretariat.
