The Minority in Parliament has staged a dramatic walkout currently marching on foot to the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), protesting the continued detention of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the MPs described Wontumi’s GH₵50 million bail conditions as excessive and an affront to democratic justice.
“We are not against criminal investigation, we are against,” one MP said tersely, while another added, “This is an upfront to our democracy.”
Chairman Wontumi, under investigation for alleged financial irregularities involving EXIMBanK, has remained in EOCO custody since his arrest on Tuesday, unable to meet the stringent bail terms.
Afenyo-Markin called the treatment of Wontumi “unfair” and warned of political repercussions, saying, “The way we are treating ourselves now—it will come back to haunt us in 2029.” The Minority further vowed to boycott Parliament until EOCO takes what they deem to be lawful and fair action.
“We are all going to sleep there with him,” Afenyo-Markin declared, urging bipartisan support to pressure EOCO into upholding constitutional standards.
Live report at the EOCO Office indicates a heavy security presence. Police has mounted a barricade to prevent any public entry.
