Schools and businesses in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region have been forced to shut down as renewed clashes continue to escalate in the area.
The decision to close down educational institutions comes amid rising tensions and fears over the safety of students and staff. Authorities say the latest round of violence, sparked by unresolved tensions between rival factions, has left several residents injured, with reports of properties destroyed.
Security has been intensified, but residents remain on edge.
On Friday, June 27, 2025, the Ghana Education Service (GES) ordered the immediate closure of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region after tribal violence in the area escalated, resulting in three students being shot within two days.
The decision followed urgent consultations between education authorities and security officials.
On Thursday, June 26, two female day students sustained gunshot wounds while on their way to school.
The violence continued on Friday, June 27, when a male student was killed by a stray bullet inside his classroom during mock examinations.
