Anti-corruption campaigner and co-chair of the Citizen’s Movement Against Corruption, Edem Senanu, has come out in strong defense of the Special Prosecutor (SP), urging him to remain resolute despite criticism.
Speaking on Prime News on ABC News GH, Senanu dismissed claims that the Special Prosecutor had been too harsh in his handling of the Ken Ofori-Atta case. “I don’t align with those that say it was an unfair practice,” he stated firmly.
Senanu particularly took issue with the initial stance of Ofori-Atta’s legal team, who had previously failed to give a clear timeline for his availability. “It is untenable that any citizen should tell the security that they are indefinitely unavailable. I think that should never happen again,” he remarked. His statement underscored concerns that individuals under investigation must not be allowed to evade accountability.
His comments come in the wake of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) officially removing former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from its wanted list, following confirmation from his legal team that he would return to Ghana in May 2025.
Despite facing criticism from various quarters, Senanu urged the SP to remain steadfast, stating, “The SP should stay focused. There will be criticism from different quarters on different issues, but if you pay attention to the facts and you are the one on the hot seat, you need a calm composure and demeanor to deal with these issues.”
While he expressed relief that the matter had been resolved, Senanu cautioned that the integrity of state institutions must not be undermined. “Let’s not take for granted the state institution,” he said, stressing that institutions like the OSP should be respected and empowered to carry out their mandate.
