The opposition New Patriotic Party has announced plans to petition Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie over what it describes as misconduct by the judge who presided over the case involving the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe.
According to the party, the petition will be submitted on Friday, May 22, following concerns over the handling of the proceedings at Circuit Court 9, particularly Abronye’s remand into custody for nine days.
Speaking to journalists after court proceedings on Wednesday, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Koduah, said the party believes the judge acted unfairly during the trial and should be investigated by the Chief Justice.
His comments came shortly after the court granted Abronye bail to the tune of GH¢100,000 with two sureties after days of legal arguments surrounding his detention.
The NPP maintains that Abronye should have been granted bail from the beginning of the case and not remanded into custody. Party officials argue that the decision to detain him amounted to an improper exercise of judicial discretion.
The party also alleged that the conduct of the presiding judge throughout the proceedings appeared prejudicial against the outspoken politician, raising concerns about fairness and impartiality within the judicial process.
Abronye is currently facing charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news. The charges stem from comments he allegedly made about a Circuit Court judge in a viral social media video.
The case has attracted significant public and political attention in recent days, with the NPP accusing state institutions of targeting some of its members. Prosecutors, however, insist the matter remains strictly a criminal case before the court.
