The internal elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the North East Region are gaining momentum, with the party’s current Regional Secretary, Sulley Sambian, officially announcing his bid for the Regional Chairmanship.
His entry sets the stage for a high-stakes contest against the incumbent, Chairman Nurudeen Fuseini, who is seeking a third term amid both praise and controversy.
Chairman Nurudeen, who has led the region since 2018, is credited with strengthening the party’s structures in the newly established region and delivering electoral victories in key constituencies such as Walewale and Nalerigu/Gambaga.
However, his leadership has not been without criticism, with some party members questioning his style and decisions.
Insiders suggest the contest could strain the already delicate unity within the regional branch, as both candidates enjoy strong grassroots and executive backing.
What began as a regional leadership race is now taking on broader significance, highlighting deeper tensions within the NPP over leadership, loyalty, and the party’s future direction.
