The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered the immediate shutdown of over 60 FM radio stations nationwide, including high-profile broadcasters Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM, following serious regulatory violations.
The action, backed by a ministerial directive, comes after an extensive audit revealed non-compliance with key provisions of the Electronic Communications Act.
Infractions include operating with expired authorisations, unpaid licence fees, and failure to meet mandatory set-up timelines. “All broadcasters must comply fully with licensing obligations to remain operational,” the NCA warned in a statement.
Among the 62 stations affected, 28 were found to be operating with expired authorisations, 14 failed to commence operations within the required two-year window after receiving approval, and 13 continued broadcasting under provisional licences.
Additionally, seven others had paid provisional fees but had not met requirements under Regulation 54.
Asaase Radio, which transmits on 99.5 FM, is currently off air.
The NCA assured the public of its commitment to enforcing broadcasting standards, stating it will continue routine monitoring to uphold regulatory compliance.
