The Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon Constituency, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, has confirmed that sanitary pads to be distributed under the newly launched Free Sanitary Pad Initiative will be produced locally in Ghana.
Speaking to ABC News GH following the official launch of the initiative on Thursday, April 24, Hon. Odoley emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting local manufacturing and creating jobs through this intervention.
“Mainly, it’s being produced in Ghana. Companies producing them will later be made public,” she disclosed.
She further explained that the Ministries of Education and Gender will soon announce the framework for distributing the pads to ensure equitable access for schoolgirls across the country.
The initiative, spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to address school absenteeism among girls during their menstrual periods by providing free sanitary pads, a move expected to enhance academic performance and restore confidence.
Echoing the President’s sentiments, Hon. Odoley reiterated that this is not a one-time gesture but a sustained policy that will empower girls and remove menstrual-related barriers to education.
Minister for Gender, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, also highlighted the need for strong partnerships to ensure that no girl is left behind due to her biological makeup.
