The Ghana Police Service has formally invited Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, to assist in an investigation regarding an alleged assault that took place during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration on Monday.
According to a post on the official Ghana Police Service Facebook page, the investigation follows the review of video footage that captured an alleged incident involving the MP and a police officer.
The police service has written to the Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament, requesting Afenyo-Markin’s release to assist in the ongoing inquiry. The officer involved in the incident will also be contributing to the investigation, the Police confirmed.
The incident in question occurred at the entrance of Parliament House, where Afenyo-Markin, who was leading the protest alongside other opposition leaders, claims a police officer, identified as Constable Forson, physically assaulted him. Afenyo-Markin recounted how the officer struck him in the chest with the full force of his palm, leaving him dazed and shaken.
Despite the incident, Afenyo-Markin, visibly affected by the assault, insisted on continuing his mission to present a petition at Parliament, though he required assistance from officials to stabilize his condition.
The MP expressed his outrage at the incident and called for a full investigation. He emphasized that the officer’s actions were unprovoked and deeply concerning, and he has since filed a formal petition with the Inspector-General of Police.
Afenyo-Markin also decried attempts by political actors to distort the narrative of the protest, which he described as a peaceful demonstration in defense of the Constitution and judicial independence.
