The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has blamed Ghana’s ongoing power outages on the country’s aging energy infrastructure.
Paul Ofori, Head of Research at COPEC, revealed that most Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have exceeded their lifespan, making it difficult for them to generate power efficiently.
Speaking to ABC News GH, he emphasized that financial constraints and lack of investment have further worsened the situation, making load shedding inevitable.
He also referenced the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo), which temporarily shut down gas transmission on February 5, 2025, for maintenance.
While 70% of the work has been completed, full restoration is not expected until March 2, 2025. Ofori cautioned that without urgent government intervention, Ghanaians could continue experiencing unreliable power supply.
He called on policymakers to develop a long-term energy strategy that includes investing in modern power plants and renewable energy sources.
