President John Dramani Mahama has met with Malian leader General Assimi Goïta in Bamako to discuss bilateral relations, regional security, and economic cooperation.
The presidency, in a Facebook post on March 9, 2025, described the meeting as part of efforts to reinforce Ghana’s diplomatic and economic ties with its neighbors.
Mahama emphasized that the visit reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between Ghana and Mali, rooted in the historical alliance between Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and Mali’s first president, Modibo Keita.
Upon his arrival in Bamako, President Mahama was welcomed by General Goïta and later proceeded to the Presidential Palace for high-level engagements.
The visit to Mali forms part of a broader regional tour, with Mahama expected to continue to Niger and Burkina Faso.
His meetings come amid significant political shifts in West Africa, as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have distanced themselves from ECOWAS structures in recent months.
Despite these shifting alliances, Mahama’s engagements with regional leaders signal Ghana’s commitment to fostering continued cooperation in trade, security, and diplomacy.
Burkina Faso’s President, Ibrahim Traoré, had previously attended Mahama’s inauguration, underscoring Ghana’s efforts to maintain strong diplomatic ties despite ongoing geopolitical realignments.
