National Coordinator of the Recreation and Wellness Agency, Betty Krosbi Mensah, has joined the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Regional Deputy Women Organizers to launch the “Revitalise the Grassroots: Empower Her” programme.
The initiative seeks to strengthen the party’s grassroots structure by promoting health, wellness, and the socio-economic empowerment of women within the NDC’s grassroots network.
Addressing participants at the event, the former Member of Parliament for Afram Plains North, stressed the strong connection between wellness and national productivity. She noted that nearly 45 percent of deaths in Ghana are linked to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), many of which can be prevented or managed through active lifestyles and improved health education.
“The National Recreation and Wellness Agency is committed to promoting active living and wellness in our communities,” she stated. “By empowering our regional organizers to champion recreation and healthy living, we can improve the overall health and productivity of Ghanaians.” The programme also served as a platform to showcase the health-centered policies of the NDC under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama.
According to Hon. Mensah, the party’s vision includes: Free primary healthcare to ensure all Ghanaians have access to basic medical services without financial hardship, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to provide sustainable support for specialized healthcare treatments, the integration of recreation and wellness into national development policies to promote healthier lifestyles.
The “Empower Her” programme is aimed at equipping Deputy Women Organizers with the skills and resources needed to effectively mobilize and engage their communities.
By combining wellness advocacy with political participation, the NDC hopes to build a stronger, healthier, and more energized grassroots base ahead of future national activities.
Hon. Mensah reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the wellbeing of Ghanaians, emphasizing that a healthy population remains essential to national growth and development.
Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah further stated that, based on the government’s latest budget statement, plans are underway to construct more than 350 health centres across the country to improve healthcare delivery at the community level.
She also noted that the government intends to continue and complete selected projects under the Agenda 111 initiative started by the previous NPP administration as part of efforts to strengthen the healthcare system and bring quality health services closer to the people.
She revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has introduced the Free Primary Healthcare policy, which will benefit not only NHIS card holders but all Ghanaians. According to her, the initiative is aimed at reducing self-medication, as some illnesses may be symptoms of more serious health conditions.
She explained that under the policy, every Ghanaian with a valid ID card will be able to access free primary healthcare services at hospitals and polyclinics to improve their health and wellbeing.
Hon. Mensah also highlighted the introduction of the “Mahama Care” initiative, which is designed to support people suffering from critical and expensive medical conditions such as cancer, kidney disease, and other serious illnesses.
