The Minority Leader in Parliament, Kwame Agbodza, has announced the reintroduction of road tolls in Ghana, but this time on a digitalized platform.
Speaking during an appearance before the Parliament’s Appointment Committee on Monday, January 20, Mr. Agbodza explained, “Yes, road tolls are coming back, but not in the form of manual collection where drivers have to stop for someone to collect money.”
He emphasized that the new system would leverage technology to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability, allowing the public to track how funds are utilized.
He assured Ghanaians that, in collaboration with the Minister of Roads, a comprehensive policy will be developed to guide the implementation of the digital toll collection.
Addressing concerns about the disabled individuals employed under the previous toll system, Mr. Agbodza stated, “If we are going to run this on a technological platform, we need to find out how many can participate. If they need retraining, we’ll explore how they can be reintegrated into the system.”
He also criticized the previous decision to suspend road tolls, describing it as “an illegality” that deprived the nation of critical revenue for road maintenance and infrastructure development.
