Renowned constitutional lawyer Kwame Adofo has called for the immediate abolition of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), arguing that it has failed to fulfill its mandate.
Adofo accused Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyabeng of prioritizing media appearances over his core duties, stating that the office has become a “disaster” and should be shut down without delay.
His comments follow Agyabeng’s recent declaration that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is a fugitive, a claim Adofo dismissed as misleading.
“Does he mean he does not know where Ofori-Atta is? That is the question we should be asking. We all know that,” he stated.
He further accused the Special Prosecutor of deliberately distorting facts, revealing that communications between Ofori-Atta’s lawyers and the OSP clearly document his whereabouts.
Adofo’s call for the dissolution of the OSP adds to growing criticisms over its effectiveness and impartiality.
He insisted that the office has lost credibility, arguing that Agyabeng’s handling of cases has raised serious concerns about due process.
“He knows where Ken Ofori-Atta is, but he is trying to mislead us,” Adofo said, stressing that the OSP’s approach has done little to inspire confidence in Ghana’s fight against corruption.
