Boakye-Yiadom Patrick has called on the government to take full responsibility for resolving the ongoing labour unrest in the health sector, stating that leadership cannot shift blame onto previous administrations.
The Deputy Ranking Member of the Health Committee emphasised that governance is a continuum, and every government inherits both assets and liabilities.
“You can’t say it was done in the previous government, so you won’t act,” he said in an interview with ABC News GH.
He described the nurses’ strike as a disturbing development, especially at a time when the healthcare system is already under strain.
“The issue of labour unrest is not good news at all.
It’s not a good development,” he said, urging the government to rise above partisan excuses and resolve the impasse. Boakye-Yiadom warned that the refusal to honour existing agreements undermines labour relations and erodes trust in public sector governance.
He stressed that timely action could have prevented the situation from escalating.
The MP’s remarks follow the GRNMA’s directive for a nationwide withdrawal of full services by nurses and midwives beginning Monday, June 9, 2025. The strike is in protest against the government’s failure to implement the 2024 collective bargaining agreement.
Despite an injunction by the National Labour Commission and appeals by the Ministry of Health, the GRNMA has stood its ground, insisting that it will not renegotiate already agreed terms.
