The prosecution in the ongoing Skytrain scandal trial has officially closed its case against former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Chief Executive Officer, Solomon Asamoah, and former Board Chairman, Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Ekumfi.
The two accused persons are standing trial over allegations that they caused financial loss to the state through the disbursement of $2 million for the proposed Skytrain project without approval from the GIIF Board.
With the prosecution closing its case, lawyers for the accused persons have indicated their intention to file a submission of no case, urging the court to dismiss the charges on grounds that the prosecution has failed to establish the offences against their clients through the evidence presented.
The court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, subsequently granted the defence three weeks to file the application.
During the trial, the prosecution called three witnesses to testify in support of its case. They included former GIIF Board Member, Yaw Odame-Darkwa; lawyer and Acting Board Secretary of GIIF, Kofi Boakye; and National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) Staff Officer, Francis Aboagye, who led investigations into the matter.
The witnesses testified, in various ways, that the GIIF Board did not approve the Skytrain project for which the accused persons allegedly authorised the release of the $2 million.
According to the prosecution, the disbursement was made without the necessary board approval, resulting in financial loss to the state.
The defence is expected to file its no-case submission within the timeline provided by the court, after which the court will determine whether the accused persons have a case to answer or should be discharged.
