The Deputy Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kokuro Asiedu, has rejected suggestions that the party’s withdrawal from the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election was motivated by fears of losing.
Speaking on ABC in the morning, Asiedu explained that the decision was purely a moral one, taken in respect of the tragic circumstances that created the vacancy following the sudden death of Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed.
Asiedu stressed that the NPP remains confident in its electoral appeal and popularity in the constituency but found it inappropriate to engage in an aggressive political contest so soon after the loss.
“Every election is different, looking at the matter we cannot go and have a competitive election,” he said. He insisted that the decision was in line with the party’s values and not a reflection of any weakness.
According to him, the move was also about showing respect to the late MP and his family, noting that politics should at times give way to compassion and moral consideration.
He emphasized that while the by-election could have been an opportunity to strengthen the party’s standing in the constituency, the NPP chose to prioritise empathy over competition.
