The Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the TUC (TEWU-TUC) has petitioned the Minister of Education to stop a breakaway group, TEWU-GH, from using the union’s name in any form.
According to King James Azortibah, General Secretary of TEWU-TUC, the continued use of the TEWU name by the rival group is misleading and undermines the union’s identity.
“They cannot continue to adopt our name TEWU,” he emphasized in an interview with ABC News GH.
“My office has already sent a petition to the Hon. Minister of Education on this issue,” he added, calling for immediate intervention.
The dispute has intensified following the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) engagement with TEWU-GH in matters related to university governing council appointments.
TEWU-TUC, with over 80,000 members nationwide, has accused GTEC of disregarding membership size and established representation protocols in favour of TEWU-GH, which reportedly has just 2,500 members.
At a recent press briefing, Mr. Azortibah warned that continued recognition of the smaller group could lead to disruptions in the operations of public universities.
