Minister of Communications, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and a leading advocate against LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana, Hon. Sam Nartey George, has launched a scathing attack on the conduct of two alleged South African men captured in a viral photo kissing at Ghana’s iconic Independence Square.
In what he describes as a “disgraceful affront to national values,” the MP has called on law enforcement agencies to immediately identify and prosecute the couple.
“These two miscreants must face the full rigours of existing Ghanaian law,” he asserted in a strongly worded statement on Wednesday.
The image, widely circulated on social media, has sparked national outrage, reigniting debates around Ghana’s legal and cultural stance on same-sex relationships.
The Independence Square, a monumental space tied to Ghana’s liberation history, has been described by many as a sacred site, and the display by the couple is seen by critics as an intentional provocation.
The Minister for Communications condemned the act, emphasizing its inappropriateness and disrespect toward Ghanaian values and national heritage.
Sam George, who has been at the forefront of the anti-LGBTQ+ crusade, used the opportunity to remind the public of his legislative efforts.
He confirmed that he has re-presented the bill to Parliament and is pushing for an expedited reading and passage.
Sam George also took a swipe at former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for what he called a “blatant failure” to sign the bill into law after it was passed by Parliament and cleared by the courts.
“We are where we are today without strict regulations on these ills because the former President failed and blatantly refused to sign the Family Values Bill into law,” he wrote, adding that he is confident President Mahama will sign it once passed.
