The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called for urgent reforms within the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), citing concerns over the institution’s transparency and accountability.
According to NUGS National Chairman, Noah Osei Asenso, WAEC’s repeated failures in handling examination results have made it necessary to review its operations.
“It’s about time we look at the conduct of WAEC,” Asenso stated in an interview with ABC News GH on February 21.
He criticized the examination body for what he described as unfair and inconsistent decision-making, which has led to thousands of students suffering unjustly.
Asenso questioned whether WAEC had the necessary oversight and called for an independent committee to monitor the examination body’s policies.
The call for reform follows a ruling by the Accra High Court, which ordered WAEC to release all withheld WASSCE results immediately.
The court dismissed WAEC’s request for a stay of execution and imposed a fine on the body for failing to provide substantial justification for its actions.
Many education stakeholders have since joined NUGS in calling for a review of WAEC’s mandate to ensure fairness and transparency in future examinations.
