The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has warned that Ghana’s power crisis will persist unless the government fully addresses issues with the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo).
According to Paul Ofori, COPEC’s Head of Research, the lack of sustainability at WAPCo is a major threat to the country’s energy stability.
He stressed that Ghana is too reliant on WAPCo for gas supply, making power generation vulnerable to external disruptions.
WAPCo recently announced that ongoing maintenance work on its gas pipelines is 70% complete, with full restoration expected by March 2, 2025.
However, Ofori believes that until Ghana secures a reliable and independent energy source, such periodic shutdowns will continue to affect businesses and households.
He urged the government to fast-track investments in local gas production and alternative energy sources to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the long term.
