The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has vowed to stage a massive nationwide demonstration in response to WAEC’s refusal to immediately release the withheld WASSCE results.
Speaking on ABC News GH, NUGS National Chairman Noah Osei Asenso declared that the student body had reached its breaking point.
“We have decided to demonstrate, no turning back,” he emphasized, as he outlined plans for protests scheduled on Tuesday, February 25 across the country.
The converging point for the protest, he said, will be Obra Spot, Accra. He further revealed that a petition will be submitted to both the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, urging these authorities to pay more attention to WAEC’s operations.
“We are expecting thousands of students. In the Central Region alone, we have planned for six buses. We will gather at Obra Spot at 9 AM and march to WAEC to present our petition,” he stated.
Osei Asenso condemned WAEC’s failure to act swiftly, arguing that the situation was severely affecting the lives of thousands of young Ghanaians.
“We have over 20,000 SHS graduates whose results have been withheld with no fault of theirs,” he stated. According to him, WAEC’s actions are not just administrative failures but also a violation of students’ rights, denying them access to further education and job opportunities.
The court ruling on January 30, 2025, ordered WAEC to release the results without any prejudice, yet the examination body attempted to appeal and delay compliance. However, on February 20, 2025, the court dismissed WAEC’s appeal, imposing a fine of GHS 5,000 for its handling of the matter. With tensions rising, NUGS has declared that if WAEC does not act immediately, student demonstrations will intensify until justice is served.
