Private legal practitioner, Justice Abdulai, has raised concerns over the GHC50 million bail granted to NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, stating it may not match the severity of the charges brought against him.
Speaking during a discussion on ABC In The Morning, he explained that while bail is not a form of punishment, it must reasonably correspond with the alleged offence to ensure the accused returns for trial.
He emphasized that, based on the gravity of the charges, the amount granted appears insufficient and that “no court will place a bail condition on him that is lower than what has been given him.”
Justice Abdulai further argued that if the level of charges is as serious as reported, then the GHC50 million figure is “way lower than we should expect.”
He stressed that bail conditions must not only reflect the legal framework but also act as a deterrent and a legal safeguard, stating, “the condition is such that, it has to be more than the amount they have charged you.”
He called for transparency and consistency in the legal process to maintain public trust in Ghana’s justice system.
