The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the youth wing of the party to position themselves for leadership as the NPP intensifies preparations towards the 2028 general elections.
Speaking during an interaction with student leaders ahead of a three-day boot camp organised by the party on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia said the initiative forms part of efforts to equip young party members with the capacity and experience needed to occupy strategic positions in the future.
“I want you to be assured that this training program is for your benefit because we want the youth to take key leadership positions,” he stated.
“And we cannot get you into key leadership positions if we don’t prepare you for the uptake of these leadership positions,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia expressed optimism about the NPP’s chances in the next general election, stressing that the party could reclaim power if it begins preparations early and remains focused on mobilisation and engagement.
“2028, Inshallah, it is going to happen in 2028. It is possible. It is possible. And we are going to work towards it,” he said.
According to him, the party is determined to actively campaign and reconnect with voters rather than relying on hope alone.
“We are not going to sit down and say it will happen, but we are going to work,” he stressed.
The former Vice President noted that young people would remain central to the country’s electoral politics, describing the youth vote as a decisive factor in both the 2024 and upcoming 2028 elections.
“The youth will take over the key positions as we move forward in this country. You know that the vote is largely youth-dominated. 2028, as it was in 2024, will be a youth-dominated election,” Dr. Bawumia noted.
He further revealed plans by the party to deepen engagement with the Tertiary Students Confederacy of the New Patriotic Party (TESCON), including visits to campuses across the country to engage students on the party’s vision and policies.
“We will take the debate, the ideas to the country, and we will make our case,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia also maintained that the NPP would not be discouraged by political pressure or arrests targeted at members of the party.
“We are, however, saying that we will not be intimidated. You can arrest all of us. We will come back and make our case to the people of Ghana,” he declared.
He ended by encouraging the student leaders to remain united and take advantage of the training programme as the party builds towards the next election cycle.
