Political analyst Dr. Samuel Afriyie has expressed concerns over the new government’s decision to revoke all appointments and recruitments made by former President Akuffo-Addo after the December 7, 2024 elections.
Speaking on ABC Midday News on Thursday, Dr. Afriyie described the move as detrimental to the country, stating, “It is creating a problem for all of us. It is something that is not helping us.”
He further noted that the president could have found a more effective way to handle the situation, rather than resorting to dismissals.
The political analyst emphasized the negative impact of such actions on the country’s stability, urging that a more inclusive approach would have been beneficial.
“The president could have found a different way of handling it, rather than sacking people,” Dr. Afriyie said, highlighting the long-term repercussions for national unity.
Dr. Afriyie also commended former Vice President Bawumia for publicly condemning the act of dismissal, referencing his previous criticisms when the NPP government was slammed for their ineffective actions in the fight against illegal mining (Galamsey).
“I believe President Mahama had the best time to end it, but it’s unfortunate,” he stated, suggesting that the current government could have used the opportunity to make more progressive changes.
In response to the revocation, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications and spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, defended the government’s decision, citing irregularities in the recruitment process.
According to Kwakye Ofosu, individuals were appointed and given backdated letters to create the illusion of prior employment, which the new administration could not allow to stand.
He assured the public that the government would conduct a new recruitment process, open to all Ghanaians regardless of political affiliation, ensuring fairness and transparency moving forward.
